Terrence Cunningham on “The Voice”; Tyler Golden/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — The Voice continued with a one-hour episode on Tuesday, and Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson trying to add talent to their teams. When the night was over, Blake and Alicia each picked up a couple of artists, while Kelly scored one and Adam failed to nab any.
Also back on Tuesday was “The Block,” which gives the coaches one chance each to block one of their rival coaches from getting an artist.
Here are the highlights of Tuesday night’s episode:
After a failed record deal, 24-year-old country/gospel singer Spensha Baker nearly gave up on music, but her passion was too strong. Her take on The Beatles’ “Blackbird” got Kelly and Blake to turn around. Kelly started the battle by saying that she grew up in church, and it was almost like Baker was “worshipping while singing that song.” Blake, who’s celebrating his 14th season on The Voice, said joining his team would be the best gift she could give him. Spensha granted his wish.
Upland, California native Alexa Cappelli, 18, chose Kiki Dee’s “I’ve Got the Music in Me” for her blind audition and coaxed Adam and Kelly to hit their buttons — though Levine never really had a chance. After Kelly argued that she and Cappelli had very similar voices, therefore she knew how to navigate with the young singer, Alexa revealed that she auditioned for her college music program with Kelly’s “People Like Us.” The two then joined each other for an impromptu duet. They’ll have plenty more chances in the future, as Alexa chose Kelly.
Georgia native Wilkes is a country songwriter, but admits his wife is really the breadwinner of the family. His rendition of The Wallflowers’ “One Headlight” caught Blake and Adam’s attention, with Shelton explaining afterwards that Wilkes was a “sneaky” singer, because the more he sang, the more he kept “turning the dial to 10.” Adam called Wilkes a “singular singer” in the competition because he represented rock & roll. Blake’s Southern, country roots won over the artist, who is now part of Team Blake.
Terrence Cunningham put music aside until his son, whom he fathered when he was in high school, turned 18. Cunningham, who is the nephew of blues legend Etta Baker, delivered a slow, soulful take on The Temptations’ “My Girl,” convincing all four coaches to turn their chairs around. Blake declared he never heard a performance like that at any level of The Voice. Kelly, as she often does, pointed to her experience competing in a talent competition and making it to the finale as the reason Terrence should pick her. Adam told Cunningham, “We need you more than you need us.” However, this contest was all Alicia’s, who, while addressing the camera afterwards, explained, “I knew that there was something special coming for me, and Terrence entered the room. He joins Keys’ team.
The Voice blind auditions continue Monday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
