Russell/Disney ABC Home Entertainment and Television DistributionIn 2007, Melissa Etheridge won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “I Need to Wake Up,” from the movie An Inconvenient Truth.  Now, more than a decade later, she’s received an invitation to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which means she’ll get to vote on who wins Oscars in the future.

Melissa is one of 928 invitees this year, 49% of whom are female and 38% who are people of color.  It’s a response to the call for further diversity in Academy membership, after the controversies of the past few years.

Other musicians who’ve been invited include Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar, who curated and contributed to the soundtrack of the movie Black Panther, and composer Wendy Melvoin, a member of Prince‘s band The Revolution.

Others stars invited to join the Academy this year include Hank Azaria, Tiffany Haddish, Christine Baranski, Dave Chappelle, Emilia Clarke, Ken Jeong, Rashida Jones, George Lopez, Kal Penn, Amy Schumer, Jean Smart, Jada Pinkett Smith and many more.
