ABC NewsRachel Platten has released a new song called “You Belong,” which she wrote for her unborn child.  The singer, now in her third trimester, debuted the song on ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday, and also revealed that she’s having a girl.  Rachel said appearing on the show was a way to prove to herself that just because she’s pregnant doesn’t mean she can’t do what she loves.

“I had this misconception that pregnancy was gonna mean that I was gonna hide from the world…and for a while, I have been doing that,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’ve been on the couch…dealing with all the stuff I didn’t know I was gonna face — like body image issues and discomfort and nausea.”

“But there’s also been some really beautiful parts,” she adds. “And part of what I’ve learned is I can go do things. And I can be brave, and give an example to my daughter that you face fear head on.”

Speaking of fear, Rachel admits she was a little afraid to release “You Belong,” because, she says, it’s “so raw and vulnerable.”  But after her manager told her, “I think this is something bigger than you think,” she said, “Let’s go for it!”

One thing Rachel has been sharing without any concerns is her feeling about her pregnancy — the good and the bad — and she says it’s been great to how from other women that they appreciate her frankness.

“Apparently, a lot of women needed to hear some more truths, y’know?” she laughs. “It’s not just, like, this beautiful time where you’re staring at your belly, gazing lovingly, and joyful. You’re throwing up and you’re nauseous and you’re exhausted and you’re uncomfortable!”

“But it’s also incredible,” she notes. “You can feel both things at the same time.”
