Joey McIntyre is the New Kid on Broadway. Tonight, the youngest member of New Kids on the Block takes over the lead male role in Sara Bareilles‘ Broadway musical, Waitress. Over the years, Joey’s appeared in a number of musicals, including playing Fiyero in Wicked on Broadway.  Joey says that despite his success as a pop star, he’s just as comfortable on the Great White Way.

“I grew up in community theater so I know the joy of the camaraderie and the togetherness and the inclusiveness,” he tells ABC Radio. “It’s in my blood.  And I’m definitely humbled to be here — but I also believe I belong.”

In Waitress, Joey will play Dr. Pomatter, the OB-GYN who has an affair with the show’s main character, Jenna, a pregnant pie-baking waitress trapped in an unhappy marriage.  He says New Kids on the Block fans have let him know they’re really excited to come see him in the show.

“I’ve been with these fans for a long, long time,” Joey tells ABC Radio. “And the New Kids have been doing it for so long that we’re like family now and they know how much I love this. So they’re just thrilled to be a part of it.”

He notes, “I mean, the New Kids getting back together 10 years ago was a whole other chapter [of my life], so they haven’t seen me on Broadway since then.  So it’s gonna be unique.”

After Joey’s stint in Waitress ends April 7, fans will have plenty of opportunities to see him in his natural habitat:  The New Kids kick off their Mixtape Tour — with special guests Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany — May 2 in Cincinnati, OH.
