Greg WilliamsEd Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Hozier and Mary J. Blige are among the artists participating in a short film organized by Eurythmics frontwoman Annie Lennox to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.
Created in partnership with Apple Music and her charity The Circle, the film serves to promote the concept of #GlobalFeminism by highlighting the injustices suffered by women worldwide, such as misogyny, violence, assault, pay disparity, illiteracy and poor health.
“Next to Me” singer Emeli Sande, Oscar nominee Richard E Grant and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie are among the other celebrities participating in the film, which shows each person holding up a sign showing an alarming statistic or fact about women worldwide.
Among those statistics: “Over 2.7 billion women are legally restricted from having the same choice of jobs as men” and “One in three women and girls are impacted by physical and sexual violence in their lifetimes.”
“Around the world, we still have a long way to go before every woman and girl has access to equal rights,” says Lennox in a voiceover. “That is why we stand together as #GlobalFeminists.”
The film is set to “Sisters Are Doin’ it for Themselves,” a hit 1985 duet Lennox recorded with Aretha Franklin for Eurythmics’ album Be Yourself Tonight.
According to Music Week, each star also selected their “favorite songs inspired by visionary women” for a #GlobalFeminism playlist.
