Crazy Horse Memorial will hold a special event for our veterans and active service members on Friday, September 3rd, where ‘One Empty Seat’ – a National Chair of Honor – will be unveiled in the Native American Educational and Cultural Center at Crazy Horse Memorial. The bond between Indian Nations and the US military has been and remains strong. Moreover, warriors do not need to be drafted; they step forward when duty calls. American Indians per capita have had the highest percentage of their people in military service exceeding every American ethnic group. The Crazy Horse Memorial has a long standing tradition of honoring veterans, not only with our veterans programs but also with multiple educational displays throughout the Memorial, such as the Code Talkers exhibit and much more.
“Dad – Korczak – was a World War II veteran and proud to serve our country,” said Monique Ziolkowski, CEO of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. “He was also very appreciative of all who have served and would be honored to have this event and chair on display at Crazy Horse.”
An Honor Guard processional will start on our Viewing Deck and proceed to the Cultural Center starting at 12:30pm. An hour-long program honoring our POW-MIA soldiers and all of our veterans and active military in attendance will culminate with the unveiling of the new ‘One Empty Seat’ POW-MIA National Chair of Honor display.
The POW-MIA Chair of Honor is a national program of The Rolling Thunder, a nonprofit organization with over 95 chapters nationwide, focused on Prisoner of War and Missing in Action issues, as well as veterans affairs. The group is known for its motorcycle rides to focus attention on veterans, with the motto “We Will Not Forget;” therefore, the POW-MIA Chairs remain perpetually empty.
Representatives of Rolling Thunder and local veterans groups will be in attendance. Local veterans groups have been invited to participate in the ceremony.
