SD Mines Hosts First Battle of the Bands

The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Music Department will host three spring concerts April 20, 23 and 27, in the Music Center on campus (Campus Map). All concerts are free and open to the public.

The first ever Spring Battle of the Bands, featuring the SD Mines University Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20. The concert will feature such concert/big band classics as “Fiesta” by Clifton Williams and “Birdland” by Weather Report. More than 100 student musicians will perform in the Battle of the Bands. The audience will choose the victor.

The Sound of Spring, featuring the University Orchestra and Brass Choir, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 23. For this concert, classical selections will include “Concert Suite in D Major” by Telemann (featuring graduating senior Alana MacLachlan), “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” by Mozart but arranged for brass choir, and “Bugler’s Holiday” by Leroy Anderson, featuring three trumpet soloists with the full orchestra.

The Spring Choir Concert featuring the University Choir, Concert Choir and Master Chorale will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27. The choirs will present “Songs of Good Hope,” a concert program of songs that emphasize the goodness of humanity and the need for generosity. Featured songs include “Gnothi Safton” by Jim Papoulis, “Let the River Run” arranged by Craig Hella Johnson, and the Beatle’s classic “In My Life,” arranged by SD Mines music assistant professor Matthew Bumbach.
