Lights out! The Journey Museum and Learning Center is excited to announce the next event in its Spring Learning Forum series, “Save Our Dark Sky”. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April
22nd, join Diane Knutson as she explains light pollution’s impact and gives tips on how to protect the view of the cosmos from our very own backyards.
“Save Our Dark Sky” Learning Forum will be held in the Wells Fargo Theater of the museum. Knutson will answer the question, “What is Skyglow?” and talk about theimpact of light pollution on humans, wildlife, and energy consumption.
Diane Knutson is the creator of the Lights Out Movement in Rapid City. As a National Park Ranger at Wind Cave, Knutson conducted research about how artificial lighting affects nocturnal habitats. This year she was elected as a Director of the International Dark Sky Association. Originally from Nebraska, Knutson grew up in Dakota City andgraduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Community Health Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She then earned a Master’s in Recreational Sports Administration at the University of Iowa and worked for the Iowa Athletic Department, before moving to Rapid City.Knutson is host of the annual Night Sky Festival in
Downtown Rapid City during International Dark Sky week in April.
Learning Forums are wide-ranging, thought-provoking presentations. Each program features a forty-five minute presentation, followed by an open forum with questions and discussion about the topic.
Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, half-off for members & free for students with a paid adult/senior admission (includes museum admission).
